In the year 2371, the straight-handled Type-II ("cobra") was replaced with one that has a curved handle ("boomerang"). The elements of the design were then refined further, giving an overall sleeker appearance.

In addition to providing a more modern look to the phaser, the property designer also solved the problem of actors aiming too high, a very common problem arising from the unergonomic nature of the straight-handled version.

This kit is the roddenberry.com hollow kit. Some refinement went into the grip, green display bar, and front nozzle, to make them fit better. The original prop was painted with Plastikote GM7173 Silver Sand. However, the Duplicolor equivalent was used because of availability reasons. All black pieces are painted with Krylon Semi-Flat Black.
